Such an interpretation is supported by the fact that in a number of Old Testament passages God is said to deliver Israel “into the hand of” their enemies on account of their sin (2 Kings 21:14; Neh. 9:27; Jer. 12:7; Ezek. 39:23). Mark portrays the disciples’ response to this second announcement of the passion as incomprehension and awe (they “were afraid to ask him”). Even though we live on the Easter side of the passion, this remains an appropriate response.
